(A) From a command prompt (DOS) type 'nbtstat -n'. Any computers with a 'type' of '<20>' are NetBIOS servers.

NETBIOS: Microsoft's software interface for accessing network resources based on NetBEUI
(Q) Is there a security problem with binding NetBIOS to my internet network adapter? Is NetBIOS over TCP/IP safe?
(A) There are many myths going around the internet saying that NetBIOS shares over TCP/IP are unsafe. The problem is actually the use of weak passwords or no passwords on network shares. As long as you use STRONG passwords on ALL your exposed network shares, there is no great danger. (Note this security bulletin about using ScopeID also)
(Q) What is SCOPE ID and how can it help secure my NetBIOS over TCP/IP network?
(A) The Scope ID option in the TCP/IP configuration provides a way to isolate a group of computers that only communicate with each other. If computers do not have the same SCOPE ID, they are invisible to each other (for purposes of file/print sharing over NetBIOS). The SCOPE ID can be set in the WINS config tab of your TCP/IP properties.
