Firewall Test Resources
Once a firewall is in place, you have to wonder how effective it is. There are many places on the internet for testing firewalls but which ones are worthwhile?

 AuditMyPC Security Scan
Easy to use and FREE port scan.  Checks about 1500 ports and checks for ports opened by trojans.
SecureMe at DSLReports.com
This is a firewall security test that we used to use at Philex Technical. There is a free version that does basic port scans and an advanced (inexpensive) version that runs a more extensive test.
GRC of ShieldsUp and LeakTest
Leaktest is a free services that tests traffic coming into your system AND traffic going out. Leaktest accomplishes this by running a small executable on your computer that simulates a Trojan horse program. If your firewall is good, the test program will be unable to reach the internet and fail.
HackerWhacker, A classic resource for security scans.

Even if your firewall test’s well you should always take some precautions when computing on the Internet.
  • Install an anti-virus program. Most firewall’s can not protect you against Trojan horses and almost none of them can protect you against virus’.
  • Never run a program of script you receive in e-mail. Even if it appears to be from a friend, call them and ask if they sent it.
  • Disable NetBios and Microsoft Networking from your internet connections. There are easy to use programs on the internet that scan for Microsoft network shares on the internet.
